There are so many really cool aids on the market now for the pet owner. One of these aids is the water bottle for dogs. No more cupping your hands to fill with water or trying to find that dirty old creek or puddle for your dog to drink from.
They can have their very own water bottle that is easy for you to carry or even they can carry it if they are used to using a backpack. But one thing for sure, older dogs need lots of water.
If you love to walk and hike with your senior dog, a bit of preparation and it will be enjoyable. You don't want to stress him out with lack of water or use all your water source to keep him happy and you thirsty. So, my dog Sasha uses the middle one on this page all the time. The one with the attached trough just seemed to work well for her. We got it a while back, and she loves to drink from it on a spontaneous walk. But there have been a few more added to the market, so check them out!
As you can see from the above examples, there is no excuse for sharing your water bottle with your pooch! They can have their very own dispenser and enjoy keeping cool.
That is the trick to these hot summer months especially for a senior dog. Keeping cool is number one, they can heat up so easily. I have had dogs most of my life that have made it to old age, and still was surprised a few times by how quickly situations can change. When I set out for a short walk with my own dog Sasha, it was cool and damp, and then suddenly the sun came out and it was sticky and humid. We were almost home but she just decided to lay down in the cool grass and at 65 pounds, there was nothing I could do but sit with her, she was to heavy for me to carry.
So being prepared in the summer for quickly changing weather will help you and your pooch. It doesn't hurt to have a ready bag or back pack with things in it for your and your dog just in case you decide to walk a little further, or take a little longer. As you have got into the habit of grabbing your portable water, grab some for them too! KEEPING DOGS COOL
