Senior Dog Harness or Sling for Stairs and Walking

Dog Support Sling for Front or Back Weakness
Many times a larger dog will start to feel some weakness in their hind quarters, and sometimes before old age depending on the breed.   By using a mobility sling or harness, you can take a little bit of the weight off the hind quarters so they feel more confident in going for walks or getting up and down the stairs.  Click on picture or link.

Dog Sling for Support
Many larger dogs have issues associated with weakness in their hind quarters and back legs, but some dogs also don't feel confident on their front legs.  By using a support harness or sling, it will make them more confident to attempt hills and stairs as well as give you the confidence to walk steadily without the fear of falling or having to pick them up and strain your back.

Dog Harness and Lead
This is perfect for the larger dog, especially dogs over 55 pounds.  This helps to support their hind legs and integrates a leash into the system as well.  This will give your older dog the confidence to go out on walks.  These are also used for recovery from surgeries to help pets get the much needed exercise and this aid will help you so that you don't end up having to carry your dog back home! Just click on the link or the picture.  Below are a few more examples for different sized dogs and needs.
Above are a few more types of harnesses and slings that can work for all different sizes and breeds of dogs.  Just click on the pictures to find out more.

Sometimes, it can be difficult for them to climb the stairs or go for walks, and if your dog is a larger dog it can be difficult for you to help them up the stairs or go out and about.  This was a major problem for our dog Sasha as arthritis had started in her back hip and it was stiff.  I can't lift her and she would be upset as she always slept in our upstairs room.

These slings help to take the weight off and give them some confidence.  You can try to make your own, but these are an affordable option and are simple to order online with Amazon and they will help you to enjoy life with your older dog once again.  There are many styles, these are just some examples, some are used more as a leash and others simply to get up and down the stairs.  I hope these will give you some ideas so that you can enjoy the senior years with your pet and feel confident to go out for walks or go up the stairs.

You can also try making your own.  In a pinch I used a cloth grocery bag to help Sasha with her back legs, but you can actually try creating a more permanent style from a cloth grocer bag.  Watch the video below to get some ideas if you don't want to purchase a sling or harness.

If you can think outside the box and really assess the situation there are all kinds of products on the market, or craft projects as above (video) that will help your older dog enjoy his golden years.

I had become quite nervous of taking Sasha too far because she is 65 pounds and when she decided she was tired, she simply lay down on the sidewalk.  I couldn't carry her, but if I had one of these slings or harnesses with me, it would have helped.  It is not like you are taking on the entire dogs weight, just simply a helping hand.  So this is something to consider for your older dog especially if you are seeing them become weaker in the hind legs.  Some dogs are weaker in the front legs, but most common is the rear end.

It can get dangerous if you try to push them up a set of stairs for you and the dog, so consider a sling or harness.  many are portable and easy to carry with you.  You may find you only need it on the walk back or up the stairs, so it is nice to have it with you and then you can enjoy your time together instead of being nervous.
