We sometimes forget that as we get older, so do they.  It may be a few subtle things at first that you will notice.  Maybe they don't bound up and down the stairs like they used to, or maybe sit when they used to run.  With my dog Sasha, it was on one of her favourite long walking routes, that she decided one spring day, that after a few extra sniffing stops, it was time to simply lay down for a while.

At 65 pounds, I had no choice but to simply sit with her.  After 15 minutes, she go back up, so from that point onwards I shortened our walks.    After a Veterinary checkup, he said she had entered senior years, and that we had to make a few changes in order to keep her happy into her retirement years.  If we pushed her too hard she would suffer.  So, we didn't want her to suffer, so we made a few changes and did a lot of research, and although I would never extend the life of a dog in debilitating pain, she was still a happy dog with a wagging tail, so I felt we owed her a few changes to keep her happy for a few more years.
